But why might you want Linux?
Here are some reasons below. Even if you don't want to get Linux on your computer
just yet, come out and see what it looks like anyway!
Reasons Linux is for you
- You want stablility: Linux doesn't crash like Windows does.
In fact, many Linux machines are up for months at a time without a crash or need for rebooting.
Now, you don't have to leave your computer on that long if you don't want to,
but don't expect to see any of those "Blue Screens of Death"
- You like to customize: Perhaps Linux's greatest strength, (and some would say greatest
weakness), is its immense flexibility. Virtually every aspect of the system
can be configured or adjusted, even the entire graphical interface.
- You like Freedom: Linux doesn't cost money (unless you want to physically
purchase the CD-ROM from someone) but that's not really what the
freedom is about. Linux is free to modify, to change, and to distribute
to all your friends. Even if you don't know how to write programs or
modify them, this means that there are alot of people out there who
do know how to modify it that are constantly working to make
the system work better.
- You want to get more out of your computer: If you've been wanting
to do more with your computer, and get more out of it, Linux may be for
you. A Linux installation typically includes all the software
you would need to be an internet server, but more importantly, once you've learned it
it gives you a powerful command line that gives you direct control over your computer.
- I want my computer to work faster: Both on more powerful machines
like the latest Pentium-II computers, and on small, older machines like
486's, Linux gets the most out of your system.
